Ive been admiring the ARCHOS Internet Tablet with Android from afar lately. A current Android device is appealing, but Im on the fence between adding a CDMA Android phone that I can swap with my Pre or simply getting a standalone Android unit. Thats when it hit me — why not repurpose my Samsung Q1UP to run Android to get a feel for such a device? I did just that over the weekend, thanks to the community at Android-x86. I found a port of Android 1.6 thats really geared for netbooks like the original Eee PC 701 and got it working on my UMPC. You can run the port from a Live CD or USB drive, so you dont have to remove your current operating system. nma.tv The Kindle Fire is finally out and there's a ton of hype about it. Tablets are hot and there's no stopping them. People are happy to see a tablet that is comparable to the iPad and less than half the price. The Kindle Fire is half the size of the iPad, full color and backlit as opposed to older Kindles, and only $199 US. However, reviews say that the screen resolution is not amazing, and neither is the sound quality, even with headphones. Also, why is the power button on the bottom? It's easy to press by accident. Others are happy with the organization of apps and media, others not so much. As with the HP Touchpad craze where people realized they could afford a tablet and jumped on the opportunity, the Kindle Fire comes out just at the right time as Christmas decorations are going up at the mall. It would make a great gift, that's for sure. But as for yourself, when would you most use your tablet? Most tablet owners say they most use it in bed or on the toilet, at least when it isn't being hogged by their kids. Think about the future possibilities of these devices! Maybe it's that little can be done within the constraints of the tablet form factor (or Motorola isn't really trying), but the general shape and build of the Xoom comes off looking just a teensy bit like the iPad's longer, more dangerous cousin. The back and sides of the device are a similar, machined metal (though Verizon's version is painted a matte black, which is a real fingerprint magnet), the corners are similarly curved, and the front is, of course, all screen. That's not to say the Xoom isn't good looking — it is — but there isn't much original going on with the general industrial design that's at play here. And that's okay by us. At 9.8 inches wide by 6.6 inches tall (with a thickness of a half inch), the device isn't massive (albeit a little unwieldy when held in portrait), and its 1.5 pound weight gives it heft without killing your arms — though it still strains your muscles a bit if you're holding the tablet up for an extended period of time. The Xoom is clearly meant to be used in landscape mode more than portrait (though it can be rotated any way you prefer).
